  Higan 2007 - from 16th March to st April 2007

Considered an “Event within an Event”, the Peony House in Bloom was admired by all who attended Higan 2007.

Beginning with an idea from Jean-Marc Windholz and his project by the architect Paola Trevisan, a typical Japanese house of 50 m2 was reconstructed for the Higan festival; it included many porches and roofs, not to mention other characteristics of traditional Japanese architecture. The Peony House in Bloom was divided into

two rooms, representing day and night. Furnished with antique Japanese furniture, both rooms had tatami floors, shoji and traditional fusuma doors.
It would be impossible to leave out the tokonoma, the space reserved for collections of precious objects, where for three weekends precious bonsai trees and important calligraphy were on display.
This domestic space blends with nature; learning from it, gathering support from it and bringing its qualities into its own structure. One example of this is a garden with a tea house that was reconstructed alongside the house; the garden was planned and carried out by the bonsai specialist and designer Edoardo Rossi.

The Peony House in Bloom has received enthusiastic reviews, the most important of which was from the Japanese Consulate General in Italy during a visit to Higan.

Numerous TV agencies have filmed inside the house, with journalists “leaning out” of the house onto the porch or seated in the seiza position in daytime space.

This Japanese house was put up under 375 m2 tensostructure, constructed specially to provide the necessary space for Higan’s project. Here, for three weekends, there was a marvelous series of exhibits: a bonsai display courtesy of Nippon Bonsai Sakka Kyookai Europe (March 16-18);

a display of Japanese art and traditions (March 23-23); and an exhibition of traditional Japanese martial arts (March 30-April 1). These all added to the exciting atmosphere of the Peony House in Bloom.

Many thanks to the technical Sponsors that contributed to the realization of this project:
CampoTrading from San Pietro di Feletto (Treviso), which made the Fusuma doors with traditional Japanese paper and with Shoji
Bamfloor from Pesaro, which provided and installed the house’s bamboo parquet flooring
Cinius from Padova, which sponsored the daytime space
EcoZüt from Padova, which sponsored the nighttime space
Collezioni Giapponesi (Tommaso Zanini), which furnished the interior of the house
Gea Verde from Soave (Verona), which contributed to the realization of the garden.
