The Devadasi dedicated their life only to the music, singing and dancing. Their performances depicted divine virtues, mythological parables and religious teachings to a huge faithful audience for which the written texts were inaccessible.
Bharata Natyam maintains old ritual values: the union of theatre and dance, of celebration and prayer; thanks to its technical and formal complexity, to the richness of its mimic language, and to the deep awareness of the aesthetical value as a spiritual vehicle, today it is recognised one of the most ancient and refined choreographic and acting traditions of human being.
Apsaras – Indian Scenic Arts Centre, aims at the creation of a centre for the research and diffusion of the disciplines of the performance coming from the thousand-year old tradition of the Indian subcontinent.
It cooperates with the Indian Tourism Agency, universities, and important teaching centres in India and Europe; it puts together dancers, actors, musicians, scholars and those passionate for Indian culture from Italy and abroad, for years it has offered intense study activities, meetings and organized performances.
