“The creation and use of
calligraphy combined
with the tokonoma’s
traditional bonsai
arrangement”
In Japan the
creation of a bonsai in
a tokonoma is considered
a form of art.
The exhibitor will
prepare the arrangement
in order to transfer his
own feelings to the
observer and, to achieve
this, he will use some
elements that will
emphasize the bonsai’s
beauty and instruct on
the atmosphere he wants
to evoke.
One of the mostly used
elements is surely the
“Shodo” calligraphy that
normally represents the
main subject of an
arrangement; when it
“accompanies” the bonsai
you achieve a refined
and extremely suggestive
arrangement.
Though the meaning of
the text isn’t often
understood by us
Westerners the beauty of
the symbol and its
perfect relationship
both with the empty
